Description
This attractive torso is from Ayutthaya, and is one of three pieces that made up a figural sculpture of Buddha. Comprised of elegant curves and soft lines, the details of diaphanous robes draped over the left shoulder are still intact. Given the placement of the arms, the Buddha was likely seated with legs crossed and hands in Bhumisparsha.
The Ayutthaya Kingdom (also known as the Kingdom of Ayutthaya) was a Siamese kingdom that existed from 1350 to 1767. It was one of the most powerful kingdoms in Southeast Asia during its peak and played a significant role in the region’s history.
